Our cemetery search was not as fruitful as I had hoped. After searching the indexes at SSGHS, I began to doubt whether my previous research was accurate. Also, we learned from a SSGHS librarian that some of the old cemeteries have been moved and merged with newer cemeteries, to make way for development. On top of that, many of the older stones are so worn and damaged, that they’re illegible.
We did, however (thanks to Grandma Hazel’s records) find Richard and Jennie’s grave, and were pleasantly surprised to see Jennie’s parents, Jacob and Agnes (Alberda) Smith, next to it. Also, John and Etta (Richard’s brother and Jennie’s sister, who were also married) were nearby.
This is a map of the Oak Hill Cemetery, in Chicago (click for a larger view.) The arrow at the top right is the entrance to the cemetery and office. The X marks the graves of:
- Jennie (Smith) Hine and Richard Hine
- Jacob and Agnes (Alberda) Smith
- John and Henrietta (Smith) Hine
If you park your car on the road, near where the pink line ends, you will see a sign marking the border between lots 17 and 17A. The Hine graves can be found four rows to the left of the sign (when you stand facing the sign) and a little less than halfway down the row.
