Knynsberg Connection

Albert Hine (Heun) was an alcoholic. There were four boys in the family: John, Richard, Peter, and Martin; and one sister, Nellie. The first three sons became fine family men but Martin was the “black sheep” in the family. He died at the age of 31 from his excessive drinking and “living a bum’s life”. He was rarely mentioned in the family except by Jennie Smith, who requested no one name a child Martin. The brothers left home as young men. Albert died in 1897 at the age of 35. Kate remarried a man named Miendert Knynsberg on 4 Oct. 1900 when Richard was 15 years old. Mr Knynsberg also drank excessively. The preceding information is from Jeanette Douma Hine’s memories.

Kate had three more children with Miendert, Anna, Garret, and Louis. This 1910 US Census shows the couple living at 57 E 100th Place with John, Peter, Martin, Garret, and Annie. Richard had married Jennie Smith three months prior. Miendert was a teamster for Standard Oil.
