In April 1923, the Henry family (Albert and Effie with their three daughters, Bertie, Hazel and Mildred) and Effie’s mother Emma Rhining traveled from Beardstown IL to Willow River, British Columbia.
This was one year after the great spring flood of 1922. But it was in direct response to the Great Railroad Strike of 1922, which put Albert Henry out of work.
Here’s Hazel’s explanation of the adventure, as told by Miranda Hine. Although the family intended to build a life in BC, they returned to Beardstown less than a year later.
Below are the immigration records for the whole family, dated 25 Apr 1923. They crossed at Emerson, Manitoba, Canada. Extended transcriptions of each can be found on Flickr by clicking on the individual images.
