ALBERTA M. COAN VALPARAISO, IN

Alberta M. Coan, 95, of Valparaiso, died Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Whispering Pines. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (George) Pearson of Valparaiso and Linda (Garlan) Grote of Garner, IA; one son, Richard (Robin) Coan of Burr Ridge, IL; 11 grandchildren, including Janifer (Craig) Grabow, nee Pearson and Julie (Richard) Podell, nee Pearson of Valparaiso; 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph D. Coan; a son, Robert H. Coan; and two sisters, Mildred Bearden and Hazel Hine. Alberta was born April 8, 1913 in Beardstown, IL to Albert and Effie (Rhining) Henry. A resident of Porter County for 70 years, she was at one time a sales clerk for Lowenstines Department Store; later for Young Fashions. A member of the Navy Mothers, she also served in the Porter Memorial Hospital Guild; and was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday at 11:30 AM at Queen of Apostles Chapel at St. Paul Catholic Church, the Rev. Joseph Pawlowski officiating, with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday morning at the church, one hour prior to the mass. Memorial contributions may be made to Rebuilding Together of Valparaiso, formerly Christmas in April.
