The handwriting on the back of this photo reads “Grandma VanVuuren and her six children.” Grandma VanVuuren was Maartje DeJong VanVuuren, mother of Tryntje/Kate Heun and grandmother of Richard Hine, my great-grandfather. She’s second from the right, sitting in the bottom row.
Maartje gave birth to seven daughters and three sons. One son, Jacob, died in infancy. Jacob #2 died date unknown. Roel (the man in the photo) lived 1862-1945. All seven of her daughters (Grietje, Gertrude, Geertje, Tryntje, Maggeltje, Guurtje, and Anna) survived until adulthood. Anna died at age 29, in the year 1900. I believe this photo depicts Roel and the six surviving daughters.
I’m going to guess the photo was taken between 1900 and 1911, between the deaths of young Anna and Grandmother Van Vuuren. One could narrow it further to between 1906 and 1911 by assuming Grandfather (Dirk) VanVuuren would have been in the photo, were he still alive.
Gertrude, I’m guessing, is in the top row, on the right, based on her resemblance to “Aunt Gertrude” in this photo:
