Charles B. Henry was Albert Henry‘s older brother, four years his senior. He was born 25 November 1879, spent time living in Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio, married Ohio-born Magdalena “Lena” Bruckmann 24 Aug 1904 in Covington, Kentucky and raised their family in Richmond Indiana and Cincinnati Ohio. I recently came into possession of my great-grandmother Effie Henry’s photo album, and I’m creating this post because there seem to be some photos of “Chas” Henry and his family.
When the 1880 US Census was recorded, Charles was 6 months old. The family was living in Lee Township, Brown County Illinois and his mother Hiram Henry was 22 years old, working as a farmer. Mother Elisabeth was “keeping house” with 3-year-old Roxy underfoot and baby “Charley” as he’s recorded on the census.
The 1900 US Census records him at age 20 living with his parents and siblings at in Mound, McDonough County, Illinois and working as an iron moulder, and able to read and write.
The 1910 US Census records Charles, Lena, and baby Charles Jr. living at 409 N 20th Street in Richmond, Indiana, with Charles employed as a moulder in the iron industry. The document states Charles and Lena were both born in Ohio, as were both of Lena’s parents.
By 1920, the family had moved to Cincinnati Ohio. I believe the address listed is 4152 Chambers St., which was a rental house. Charles continued to work as a moulder in the foundry. Charles Jr. was 13 years old and had two younger siblings, Frank H. and Alma A, aged 9 and 7 respectively, both born in Indiana. His WWI draft card says he was working at Oberhelman-Ritter Foundry Company,
In 1930 the family continued to live in Cincinnati and Charles continued to work at the foundry. They lived at 1 Moline Court, which they rented for $30/month. Charles and Lena and had two more children, both born in Ohio–
- Charles Jr., 24
- Frank, 20
- Alma, 17
- Ruth, 9
- Jewell, 3
Charles Henry died 3 July 1937 at the age of 56, of myocarditis. At the time he was living at 1420 Apjones Street, Cincinnati. He’s buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. Lena died 24 Sep 1956 at age 72 and is buried beside him, along with her parents John F. E. Bruckmann and Mary Streng Bruckmann, siblings William and Charles Bruckmann and Amelia C. Bruckmann Sterner (William died of cholera infantum when he was one week old), and extended family.
Effie’s Photos
I’m going to add some phone snapshots of related photos I find in Effie’s photo album below, as placeholders. And then when I have a chance I will create high quality scans of them. The first set was all on one page and appears to be photos from a trip to Santa Claus Indiana.
Here is another set of photos from Effie’s album showing the Charles Henry family:
