Arranged chronologically by death date within the corresponding counties. Note: I’m including individuals who are not family members but whose names show up in documents related to family members, ie. guardians appointed by the Orphans Court, executors, and individuals who bought or sold land to the family.

Below are references to Rowan County wills with the last name Cowan, which I have not connected to our family tree yet. They are listed in alphabetical order by first name. I will move individuals to the list above as I figure out who they are.

Orphans Court

These records are categorized based on the name of the deceased father, and roughly chronological by death date. If no death date is listed, I have yet to firm up where the individual lies in the family tree.

  • William Fleming proceedings from 15 December 1747, Chester County Orphans’ Court Records, 1716-1850 ; Index to Minors’ Estates and Decedents’ Estates, 1716-1885: Orphans’ Court Records v. 1-11 1716-1809: page 8/image 170 minor children John and Anne Fleming choose George Fleming and Hugh Cowan as guardians.
  • Same as above, following page (9): James Fleming petitions court to appoint guardians for William & James, children of William Fleming deceased. Court appoints Henry and Peter Fleming as guardians.

David Cowan Jr. (1693-1757)

  • David Cowan Jr. proceedings from 8 September 1768, Lancaster County Miscellaneous Books 1768-1782: Orphans Court 1768-1772 page 72 Citation awarded to bring David III & William into court to settle Henry’s estate, in response to motion by John Cowan & Margaret Cowan (via her guardian Anthony Elmaker).
  • David Cowan Jr. proceedings from 17 September 1768, Lancaster County Miscellaneous Books 1768-1782: Orphans Court 1768-1772 page 70 Anthony Elmaker appointed guardian for Margaret Cowan
  • David Cowan Jr. proceedings from 6 June 1769, Lancaster County Miscellaneous books 1768-1782: Orphans Court 1769-1772 pages 122-123 Court orders a jury to assess/appraise Cowan lands.
  • David Cowan Jr. proceedings from 5 August 1769, Lancaster County Miscellaneous Books 1768-1782: Orphans Court 1768-1772 page 132 Land valued at £1,500. Court orders David Cowan compensate his siblings for their shares.
  • David Cowan Jr. proceedings from 22 May 1772, Lancaster County Miscellaneous books 1768-1782: Orphans Court 1768-1772 page 355 In response to a request from David III, the court issues a citation compelling his mother Mary to appear in court, “3rd Tuesday in June next” to settle the estate (this would’ve been the 16 June and I’m unable to find a record of this happening)
