Richard Hine Stationary Store

I recall my dad telling me Richard Hine had a shop in Roseland where he sold stationary and repaired typewriters. We ended up with one of his typewriters in our basement after moving Grandma out of Furnessville. My guest book table at my wedding used a typewriter (not the same one) in honor of Richard, and the above photo was framed on the table. But this is the extent of my knowledge of him, as he died 10 years before I was born.

Zooming in on the photo, it looks like Richard also sold shaving supplies, drills, files, squares, oil cans, harmonicas, cigars, and more. What can you see? Do you have any more info on Richard’s shop?

Shop Location

This week I was looking at his 12 Sep 1918 WWI draft card and it states he was self employed and his business was “school supplies”. His business address is listed as 11418 S. Michigan Avenue and his home address as 328 W 110th Street.

It’s possible property numbers have changed since then, but if not, Richard’s shop was located in the building pictured below. His home is no longer standing, but it was located in the lot pictured on the right:
