The Martin Hogan Family Syracuse Home

The 1893 Syracuse City Directory is consistent with an 1892 NY State Census entry for the Martin Hogan family.

The census entry puts them in the 1st Electoral District of the 1st Ward, on the far north side of Syracuse.

  • Mary Hogan, 33

  • Frank Hogan, 26, Agent

1893 Syracuse City Directory

The census didn’t record addresses that year, however I was able to household members with Hogans residing at 1102 Center Street, listed in the 1893 directory:

  • Martin Hogan, laborer, h. 1102 Center
  • Mary A. Hogan, housekeeper, h. 1102 Free
  • Maggie Hogan, housekeeper, h. 1102 Center
  • Edward Hogan, teamster, h. 1102 Center
  • Owen H. Hogan, coachman, bds. 1102 Center
  • Martin Hogan, carriagewrok’r [sic] bds. 1102 Center
  • Frank J. Hogan, carriage trimmer, bds. 1102 Center

According to an H. Wadsworth Clarke 1871 map of the City of Syracuse, Center Street corresponds with present-day Lemoyne Ave. The only name on the census that doesn’t match perfectly with the directory is Owen’s sister Mary. There are a number of reasons this may be the case, but my favorite theory is that it’s a mistake and 1102 Free Street (present-day Hiawatha Blvd) was supposed to be 1102 Center Street.

I haven’t researched whether the house numbers have changed since then but this is present-day 1102 Lemoyne Ave.
